25/01/2010
Diabetes mellitus represents a worldwide epidemic. However, the real prevalence of diabetes mellitus in the countries of the former Soviet Union, which underwent rapid transition during a relatively short period of time, including dramatic changes to the health care system, is not known. Ukraine is a country with a population of 46 million people, which became an independent state in 1991. The registered prevalence of diabetes mellitus in Ukraine is significantly lower than in neighboring countries.1 The number of patients diagnosed with diabetes is 1.063 million, which represents around 2% of the total population. This relatively low prevalence of the disease could be due to the high number of subjects with undiagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus.
