“March bread” from Kaliningrad
Have you ever
heard of so-called “March bread”? Meanwhile it is so popular in Kaliningrad that they have even patented their exclusive recipe for such. Guessed what it is? Surely, I’m talking of marzipan. It is a mixture of sugar syrup and finely ground almond.
Its origin dates back to the early years of the last millennium when the citizens of Italy experienced a season of a poor crop. So, they reacted spontaneously and came up with sweet almond bread, almond pizza and pasta with almond sauce.

But beware!
There
you can hardly resist the temptation to buy a handful of marzipan bars, especially the prominent
44-almond-% Koenigsberg Marzipan
with a crisp crust!

They say that
doctors used to prescribe “March bread” as treatment in certain cases.
Actually, it’s extremely rich in calories.

The template exhibits
represent the fashion of large factories to stamp out marzipan cakes of various shapes and sizes with numerous symbolic images.

Marzipan serves the
material for a mind-blowing craft of modelling.
The works include a chessboard with chessmen and
a replica of the Koenigsberg Cathedral, the most preserved monument in the old city.

Children can go
even further and get a set of coloured marzipan used as play dough for their own crafts, like Winnie-the-Pooh, Crocodile Gena and other prominent cartoon characters.
