The Capital of New Zealand
Wellington is the capital city and third most populous urban area of New Zealand, although it is likely to have surpassed Christchurch due to the exodus following the Canterbury Earthquake. It is at the southwestern tip of the North Island, between Cook Strait and the Rimutaka Range. It is home to 389,700 residents.
Mount Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand, reaching 3,754 metres.
The coat of arms of New Zealand
- is the official symbol of New Zealand. The initial coat of arms was granted by King George V on the 26 August 1911, and the current version was granted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1956.
"God Defend New Zealand" is one of t|wo national anthems of New Zealand, the other being "God Save the Queen". Legally they have equal status, but "God Defend New Zealand" is more commonly used, and is popularly referred to as "the national anthem". The anthem has English and Māori lyrics, with slightly different meanings.
