Most foods contain a number of nutrients. For

example, pizza
has carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water.
No

single food contains all the nutrients in the amounts you need, however.
To help, the government created a guide called the food
pyramid.
It helps people understand how to choose a healthy diet.
The colored stripes stand for the five food groups plus fats and oils.
You need to eat foods from each different color group every day.


The Food PyramidMost foods contain a number of nutrients. For example, pizza has carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins,

When you look at the food pyramid, you will see that
some stripes are thicker and some are thinner.
For example, the orange stripe is thicker than the yellow
one. It let’s you know you need to eat more grains than
fats and oils. You can also see that the stripes start out
wider on the bottom and get narrower at the top. This
shows that some foods in a group are healthier than others.
For example, in the fruit group ,an apple would be at the
bottom of the stripe and apple pie would be on top.
That is because an apple is a lot healthier than an apple pie.

1.Start your

day off right with a good breakfast. One healthy

breakfast could be a slice of whole grain toast, a scrambled
egg, a glass of milk, and a piece of fruit.
2.Choose healthy snacks. Instead of potato chips, eat an apple or
some sliced carrots.
Instead of a candy bar, have a handful of raisins, a few whole
wheat crackers, or a cup of yogurt.
3.Try not to eat foods with a lot of sugar, such as candy, cake,
cookies, and donuts. Too much sugar can harm your teeth and
lead to cavities.
4.Cut out soda. Most sodas have lots of extra sugar and many
have caffeine. There are many healthier drinks such as water,
low –fat milk, and 100 per-cent fruit juice.
