Bashkortostan is the republic, named for the indigenous people "of
the Bashkirs." Russian name of this republic is Bashkiria, firmly
established in the late 16th century. The first written mention of the individual tribes have joined the Bashkir people are found in the writings of Herodotus. On the map of Ptolemy we can find the Ural River. Valuable information is contained in the writings of al-Balkhi. He wrote that Bashkirs were people, who were divided into two groups, one of which lived in the southern part of the river Ural, the other is near the Danube, near the borders of the Byzantine Empire.
