Some weeks before Christmas American people are busy. They make or buy Christmas cards and send them to all their relatives: grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles and their friends. You can buy Christmas cards or you can make them. Many children make their cards at school.
New information:
People wish “Merry Christmas”. The cards often show pictures of the birth of Christ, Santa Claus, Christmas tree or Robins.
People buy a Christmas tree and children decorate it with toys, coloured balls and little coloured lights.
Every year there is the biggest Christmas tree of the country in the centre of New York, in Time Square. In the evening before Christmas people like to come to Time Square to look at the tree. On Christmas Eve the streets in New York are decorated, too.
On Christmas Eve people put their presents under the Christmas tree. When children go to bed, they put a long sock called Christmas stocking near their bed or by the chimney or hang it by the fireplace so that Santa Claus will fill it with presents. He puts a tangerine or a nut into the stockings. Children think that Santa Claus visits each house on Christmas Eve by climbing down the chimney.
At night Father Christmas comes. He has a big bag of presents for children. He puts the presents into the children’s stockings.
Grown-ups open their presents on Christmas morning and they all happy with what they get.
The most important meal is Christmas dinner. At the beginning of the meal, people often pull a cracker. It has a small toy, a paper bat, and a joke. The meal consists of turkey with potatoes and vegetables: carrots and sprouts. Then they have the Christmas pudding – a sweet pudding. It contains a lot of dried fruit.
Americans bake special biscuits called Christmas cookies which they eat over the Christmas season (from the middle of December to the end of the year).
Santa Claus is an imaginary old man in red clothes and with a long white beard. Children think that Santa Claus lives at the North Pole. He spends most of the year in his workshop. There he makes toys for children elves help him. People call them “brownies” in America. Children think that Santa Claus flies about the sky in a sleigh pulled by reindeer.
Young children are told that Santa Claus will bring them presents if they are good . Children usually write a letter to Santa Clause. They tell him what presents they want for Christmas. On Christmas Eve (December 24th, the day before Christmas Day), they often leave out something for him to eat or drink.
Christmas carols are religious songs which people sing at Christmas. At Christmas time groups of people sing carols, both indoors and outdoors. They usually collect money for homeless and poor people. Sometimes carol singers, especially children, go along the streets from house to house, singing in front of each house and asking for money.
