Wales. It was founded in 1883 as the University College of South Wales. In 1997 it received its own degree-awarding powers. Cardiff University is the third oldest university institution in Wales containing three colleges: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Biomedical and Life Sciences; and Physical Sciences and Engineering.

Extensive playing fields for Rugby and football are located at the University playing fields.
