Слайд 4How do I choose my Research Question?

How do I choose my Research Question?

Слайд 5Step 1: What are you interested in?
Think about what

you are interested in connected to Social Sciences such as

History, Geography, Politics, Sociology.
Choose what you want to do, not what you think you should do or what your friends want to do
If you are interested in it, your research project will be much better and you will be more likely to achieve a higher mark!
Step 1: What are you interested in? Think about what you are interested in connected to Social

Слайд 6Step 2: What questions or controversies exist within my selected

theme?
I am interested in why people smoke
Next step, think about

what questions are connected to this issue. If you are struggling to think of questions, then try reading something about your theme to help you with ideas

Why do people begin smoking?
Does the cost of cigarettes stop people smoking?
Does educating children on the dangers of smoking stop young people smoking?
Do images of celebrities smoking influence young people’s decision to start smoking? – I am going to choose this question
If parents smoke are young people more likely to start?
Do images of smoking related health problems on packets stop people smoking?

Step 2: What questions or controversies exist within my selected theme?I am interested in why people smokeNext

Слайд 7Step 2: What questions or controversies exist within my selected

theme? Another example
Next step, think about what questions are connected

to this issue. If you are struggling to think of questions, then try reading something about your theme to help you with ideas

How do people in Eurasia feel about voting?
Are there parts of Eurasia where people are not allowed to vote?
Do people think that voting creates a better society?
Do older people and younger people disagree about the need to vote?
Do people feel that voting allows them to decide important issues relevant to their country? – I am going to choose this question

I am interested in the theme of voting and democracy

Step 2: What questions or controversies exist within my selected theme? Another exampleNext step, think about what

Слайд 8Step 3: Read! Is enough information available on my chosen

research question?
Do images of celebrities smoking influence young people’s decision

to start smoking?

Do people feel that voting allows them to decide important issues in their country?

REMEMBER – YOUR SOURCES MUST BE IN ENGLISH AND BE CREDIBLE!

If you can find 5 or 6 interesting and credible sources of information to help you answer your research question then move on to the next step
You may also find something in your reading that really interests you, you can of course go back and change your research question.

Read as much as you can about your chosen theme in different cultures, different opinions on key issues attached to the theme you have chosen, developments in the area of your theme, etc…

Step 3: Read! Is enough information available on my chosen research question?Do images of celebrities smoking influence

Слайд 9Step 4: Refine! Now you have a wider knowledge of

the topic do you want to refine your research question?
Do

images of celebrities smoking influence young people’s decision to start smoking?

Do people feel that voting allows them to decide important issues in their country?

Lots of research has been done about whether this influences girls so I am interested to do research to see if boys are affected by this imagery

From my research I was really interested in the variety of views found in Eurasia

Refined questions

Are male teenagers influenced on their decision to smoke by seeing celebrities with cigarettes?

Do people in Eurasia feel that voting allows them to decide important issues in their country?

Step 4: Refine! Now you have a wider knowledge of the topic do you want to refine

Слайд 10Step 5: Will I be able to conduct Primary research

for my research question?
Let’s take the example research question,

to see how we could conduct Primary Research:
‘Are male teenagers influenced on their decision to smoke by seeing celebrities with cigarettes?’

Survey

Interview

Prepare and e-mail questions for experts in the fashion, media or tobacco industries connected to smoking
Prepare and e-mail questions to academic experts on behaviour, advertising and health

Use a survey in Uralsk
Create a Survey on a website such as SurveyMonkey

Step 5: Will I be able to conduct Primary research for my research question? Let’s take the

Слайд 11Other methods of Primary Research:
Observation
If you are talking about

a topic which contains elements of psychology, sociology or something

connected to human behaviour then you can use this method.
Observation can be structured or naturalistic

Experiment
Again, mainly useful if you want to examine a topic related to sociology or psychology
In an experiment, you examine the effect of a variable on a set of subjects

Step 5: Will I be able to conduct Primary research for my research question?

Other methods of Primary Research:Observation If you are talking about a topic which contains elements of psychology,

Слайд 12Step 6: Let’s check we have an appropriate Research Question
Are

you interested in your topic?
Are there controversies or areas

connected to your topic that still need to be researched?
Are there sufficient English language sources available to read and use for your research project?
Have you refined the question so your research will not be too broad?
Will you be able to do effective Primary Research connected to the question?

If you can answer yes to all these steps then your research question will be appropriate!

You finished your research question? HIGH FIVE!

Step 6: Let’s check we have an appropriate Research QuestionAre you interested in your topic? Are there
