First proposed in 1891, as a "Pan-Britannic-Pan-Anglican

Contest and Festival every four years as a means of

increasing goodwill and good understanding of the British Empire".
In 1911, Inter-Empire Championships were held as part of the festival dedicated to the King George V coronation: teams from Australia, Canada, South Africa, and the UK competed in boxing, wrestling, swimming, and athletics.
In 1930, Hamilton, Ontario, first British Empire Games.
Six sports: athletics, aquatics (swimming and diving), boxing, lawn bowls, rowing and wrestling. Women competed in swimming only.

highest scoring team for twelve games, England for seven and Canada for one.
A total of 94 participants over the course of holding the Games.
Norfolk Island participates separately since 1986.
