Слайд 1Movies Inspired by Shakespeare’s Plays
Слайд 3Great English poet and playwright. His works have become classics
of world literature and are still relevant today. He was
able to bring more than 2000 new words to the speech of the English people. The life of this man is full of legends and riddles, and scientists still can't solve the mystery of his identity. Could a simple poorly educated actor of the London theater write such brilliant works? Was the man hiding behind the mask of this talented poet? Despite the fact that the answers have not yet been found, he is considered the best playwright in world history. William Shakespeare is a man from Stratford.
Слайд 4The contribution to world culture is huge, but it does
not end there. These works are seriously reflected in our
time. The work of this remarkable man has significantly influenced many areas and industries, including the film industry.
Слайд 5Throughout the history of cinema, dozens of films have been
either inspired or adapted from plays by William Shakespeare
Richard Beymer
and Natalie Wood in the 1961 film West Side Story
Слайд 6Whether they focus on plot or characters, including storylines that
use star-crossed lovers or mistaken identities, the filmmakers continue to
borrow liberally from the Canon of William Shakespeare and its universal themes.
Слайд 7If you look at films based on the plots, lines
and elements of Shakespeare's works, you can see how brilliantly
a particular picture is presented, based on works already known to all.
Слайд 8Warm Bodies (2013) –A paranormal romantic zombie comedy, the film
has been described as an undead take on Romeo and
Juliet
Слайд 9Based on Isaac Marion’s novel of the same name, the
film chronicles the development of the relationship between a young
woman named “Julie” and the zombie “R” eight years after a zombie apocalypse.
Слайд 10The movie was noted for being told from a zombie’s
perspective and for displaying human characteristics in zombie characters.
Слайд 12Richard Larson of Slant Magazine said, “The ubiquity of Shakespeare’s original template
allows Warm Bodies some leeway in terms of believability…but the film’s persistent
charm encourages us to look past a few festering surface wounds and see the human heart beating inside, which is really what love is all about.”
Слайд 13It's unexpected to see a Shakespeare imprint in a movie
like this, right?
Слайд 15She’s the Man (2006) – Surprisingly, certain Shakespeare plays have tended
to work well as the premise for some successful teen
films, and this romantic comedy—a remake of the 1985 film Just One of the Guys—was based on Twelfth Night.
Слайд 16Instead of a shipwreck, a new high school is the
setting for this story, which features gender-bending, disguises and love
triangles.
Amanda Bynes plays “Viola Hastings,” a teen who must pose as her brother to play on a boy’s soccer team after her school soccer team is cut.
Слайд 18West Side Story (1961) – Inspired by Romeo and Juliet, this classic
New York musical was an adaptation of the 1957 Broadway
musical of the same name
Слайд 19 A tale of two rival street gangs, the film chronicles
the story of Tony, a member of the American gang,
who falls for Maria, the sister of the leader of the Puerto Rican gang. With catchy tunes and dance-offs by the rival gangs, West Side Story was a smash hit at the box office, in addition to earning critical acclaim
Слайд 21Nominated for 11 Academy Awards and winner of 10, including
Best Picture, the film holds the record for most wins
for a movie musical.
Слайд 23A Thousand Acres (1997) – Based on Jane Smiley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning
novel of the same title, this film has been described
as a “Midwestern” King Lear
Слайд 24In the movie, patriarch Larry Cook decides to hand joint
ownership of his farm over to his three daughters, and
in doing so, causes a bitter rivalry while exposing dark family secrets.
Слайд 25Although the film didn’t garner much critical acclaim, it boasted
a stellar cast comprised of Michelle Pfeiffer, Jessica Lange, Jennifer
Jason Leigh, Jason Robards and Colin Firth.
Слайд 27Ran (1985) – Based on King Lear, Japanese director Akira Kurosawa’s epic
film re-imagines Shakespeare’s play as a Japanese warlord dividing his
empire amongst his three sons.
Слайд 29In this story infused with Japanese legend, as well as
its Shakespearean roots, Ran received universal acclaim and is often cited amongst
Kurosawa’s finest achievements.
Слайд 31Kurosawa also made the Macbeth adaptation Throne of Blood (1957) and The Bad
Sleep Well (1960), which was a nod to Hamlet.
Слайд 33There are a huge number of film adaptations of Shakespeare's
works, but the most popular, which is not surprising, has
always been and remains the story of Romeo and Juliet.
Слайд 34The last film adaptation was a film by Italian Director
Carlo Carlei, released in 2013.
Слайд 35Carley's project was initially presented in the media as "Romeo
and Juliet for the Twilight generation". Fellowes, meanwhile, insisted that
" the film will be truly Shakespearean, conveying the spirit of the middle ages." He told the Hollywood Reporter the following: "We proceeded from the fact that for quite a long time, Shakespeare's play did not receive a traditional romantic embodiment on the screen. Of course, there have been some Romeo and Juliet movies made since Zeffirelli, and even good ones, but they were shot in Ohio or some other place. This is not exactly what I would like. According to Shakespeare, this story took place in the middle ages. The only thing we saw fit to bring to our film is to make it a little more accessible to the current generation. That's all. I would like those who will watch this film to perceive its content as a complete thing written by Shakespeare."
Слайд 36Carley decided to shoot in the places where the play
should unfold accordingly: in Verona and Mantua. Juliet's house and
balcony were rented in the town of Caprarola, and the Church and monastery courtyard in Subiaco. Some scenes of the film were shot at the Cinecitta Studio in Rome, where the scenery of the Capulet family crypt was created, where the lovers found their fatal end.
Слайд 39The released film, however, is not an exact adaptation of
Shakespeare's work and can be defined as a version based
on it. Much of the original Shakespearean text in the film is abridged or interpreted by Julian Fellowes, who included lines of his own writing in the script.
Слайд 41William Shakespeare has always been and will always be one
of the best playwrights.
Слайд 42His works, in whatever form they were presented by their Creator, have
found and will find success in all spheres.
Слайд 43The influence of the works of this genius will be eternal. And
if you don't know his plays, you've definitely seen at least
one film that conveyed the idea that this Bard was trying to convey.
