A legend says that Valentine was a
priest who served during the third century in Rome.
At
that time there was an Emperor by the name of Claudius II.

Emperor Claudius II decided that single men
were better soldiers than those who were married. So he
outlawed marriage for young men in hopes of building a stronger army.

Valentine thought this decree wasn’t fair and
started to marry young couples secretly.
When Emperor Claudius II
found out about Valentine’s actions he had him put to death.
