20th century, most people didn’t have watches, and prior to the 18th century even home clocks were rare.

The tower is now officially
called the Elizabeth Tower. It was renamed after celebration of
Queen Elizabeth IIDiamond Jubilee.

Initially in the 15th century
it was named the Frolovskaya Tower after the Church of
Frol and Lavr in the Kremlin. The Church is no longer there.

Spasskaya Tower
The Spasskaya Tower got
its name when the icon of Spas Nerukotvorny was placed
above the gates on the inside wall in 1658.The wall-painted icon of Spas Smolensky was created on the outside wall of the tower.
